When it comes to finding new anime, there are only a handful of resources to go around. I'm guessing that most of you get your anime information from the internet, and sometimes it's directly from the licensee. Naturally, these are the guys that are putting out trailers for their upcoming features. These trailers can be absolutely make-or-break moments for a newly localized series.
The above trailer for Birdy the Mighty: Decode is one of the best trailers I've seen in a long time. While I had some interest in the series to begin with, this trailer really sold it for me. Everything from the editing to the music really sealed the deal for me. This shows the power that anime trailers can have. If you happen to read some of the YouTube comments on that trailer, you can see that people that aren't even into anime were enticed by this trailer.
If only anime trailers had another big venue to show off their stuff. I know it's a bit silly to say that the internet isn't enough, but I could only imagine how powerful these trailers would be if they played in movie theaters. I think this kind of content would be perfect for movie theater pre-rolls. You know, the video content you see before the lights go down and the movie trailers come up. I've seen TV shows and video games featured during this time, and I see no reason why anime trailers wouldn't work. I'm guessing it's all just a matter of money.

P.S. - I don't know if you guys have noticed, but Funimation seems to have an excellent group of people putting together their trailers. Out of all the companies out there, Funimation really sells me with their slick editing and amazing in-house music.

ReplyDeleteYes, I have noticed, and they always seem to have amazing music associate with them!
Not really trailers, but I always liked the Toonami promos.
ReplyDeleteThe trailer for Redline hyped me up for MONTHS, possibly years. It definitely satisfied me when I finally saw it.
