We're all anime fans here, right? Either you're just getting into anime or you've been following the content for years now. It doesn't matter to us how long you've been an anime fan, as we love you all just the same! We all understand that anime came into your life at one point, and it hasn't left yet! With all that great anime content out there, it's really easy to get sucked in.
That's why I'm curious about where exactly your first anime experience came from. Depending on the range of ages for readers on this blog, I can only imagine the content that you came across first. The first bit of anime you saw may not even be the one that convinced you to check out what other anime was out there. Still, I'm dying to know your first exposure!
For me, I am pretty sure that my very first anime feature that I watched from start to finish was Iria: Zeiram the Animation. Sci-Fi used to show this anime all the time, and one lucky morning I actually caught it from the start. I had never seen anything like it from an animated feature before. It was just so engaging, and so different from what I had been watching through traditional American animation. That's why I was intrigued to check out what else anime had to offer.
That leads me to where I am today, a huge anime fan! What was the first feature you saw that introduced you into the world of anime?
It was Street Fighter II, the one with the infamous Chun-Li shower scene. The first anime i watched regularly was Sailor Moon. I never watched it in front of my friends. I was young and afraid to be judged for watching something that was considered by many of them to be a "girlie cartoon."
ReplyDeleteProbably DBZ, Sailor Moon, or Pokémon. I'm not entirely sure.
ReplyDeleteLike I said in a previous comment, SuperBook. It was the first anime I saw about 17-18 years ago when I was about 3 or so years old, and I watched it ENDLESSLY. And after that, I watched the various shows that started appearing, like DragonBall, Sailor Moon, etc. I always knew that anime was Japanese; therefore, anything that looked like SuperBook had to be Japanese.
ReplyDeleteAnd I loved it all. <3
I have no clue which "one" anime was my first.
ReplyDeleteIt was some anime from Toonami though. Whether it be Sailor Moon, DBZ, Gundam Wing, I'm not sure. But it was from that time period.
Sailor Moon. It was on in the morning before I went to school, so I saw it as I was getting ready.
ReplyDeleteI randomly saw an episode of Dragon Ball once as well, but I had no idea what it was (before Cartoon Network had DBZ; Heck, before Cartoon Network in general).
As for the first one I watched from start to finish? No idea. Probably FLCL, since it was only 6 episodes long, but I honestly can't remember.
I'm right with you on Iria. A friend introduced it to me when it use to play on Sci-Fi back in the good ole days.
ReplyDeleteAfter that, I ended up buying the first movie that came out for Tenchi Muyo series, having no idea what it was about or anything. That got my ball rolling. After that, there was a comic book store that rented VHS anime tapes that I would go rent from time to time.
Sailor Moon, I'm pretty sure its original run before it became frequent on Tonami. They had like four episodes they looped a few times for a little while. DBZ is what really got me watching anime for years, but once that was over, I was done.
ReplyDeleteI kind of had an anime rebirth with Kannon.
My first anime was Pokemon, and it is still my favorite!
ReplyDeleteToonami
ReplyDeleteSailor Moon, I'd guess. I remember that, Monster Rancher, and Ronin Warriors being on UPN in the morning before I went to elementary school.
ReplyDeleteAfter I graduated high school, I was watching tv, and on one of the movie channels, they were showing Princess Monokee, I had no idea what it was about and started watching. I was engrossed in the film, and was amazed by the plot. I also got my drivers licence during this summer. I started driving on the first day of college, after my classes, I went to Circuit City, and looked thru the anime collection. I noticed that they have a collection of Robotech box sets, I ended up getting the first box. I sat down and watched it, and it wasn't till the 3rd episode, where I got hooked on it and bought the rest of the series. After I completed that whole series, I was hungry for more, so I ended up buying more anime. Full Metal Panic is the next one I got, and it got me further into anime. I agree that anime can have alot of cliches, but movies, books, videogames, etc, each have their own cliches, so I don't see a problem. Also, I can watch any type of anime except shounen ai and yaoi. I tend to watch online for free alot, and if I really love the anime show I buy it on dvd/bluray when the show comes out over here..
