This week's skewed comment on anime

I think I'm going to make this a weekly feature.  I don't believe I'll do the post the same day every week, since comments via Twitter come in all the time.  I'll just the right one when I see it!  That's exactly what happened just a few minutes ago.  Again, I'm not going to name the Twitter user that made this statement, only because I'm not trying to get people to rag on here.

anime is a grown mans excuse to watch kids shows

I always say that people have the right to their own opinion, and that stands true even with this statement.  With that said, I always look for the reasoning behind statements.  If someone takes a stance on a subject, I feel they should be able to explain where they're coming from.  That's what I'm looking for from this person.  I've sent out my message, and I'm eagerly awaiting the response.

Personally, I feel her answer isn't just offensive, it's flat-out wrong in one way.  To say that animation is for children only is like saying live-action is for adults only.  It just doesn't make any sense and simply isn't true.  Live action programming can be made for kids, and animated features can be geared towards adults.  How someone believes this is beyond me!

I'll be sure to keep you updated on what happens with this person.  I'd love to show her what anime is all about, but I think this person might be a challenge.  That's okay...I'm always up for challenges!

  1. To say that much is pretty funny, given the popularity of what many would refer to as "kids shows" with the over-20 set. Shows like Invader Zim, Spongebob, and Adventure Time are all pretty popular with the over-20 set, even though they're firmly pitched as childrens' shows.

This comment is indicative of a pretty large double-standard - namely that anime fans in general are either kids or man-children that are ill-adjusted to society. We're today's Trekkies, and the stigma unfortunately isn't entirely unwarranted. After all - stereotypes come from the most obvious aspect of something - no matter how minute the population is. And, sadly, I've seen a enough creepy man-children in conventions and events to know where the joke stems from.

  2. Anime is for adult men to watch cute girls doing cute things. ex. K-on

Or for women, watching handsome men doing cute things. ex. Tiger and Bunny

  3. Hmmm... Highschool of the Dead is an anime, and it is rated MA. And looking on Wikipedia MA stands for -

"Mature audience — unsuitable for audiences under 17"

    So people 17+ are kids?

I understand the K-ON! part, but how is Tiger & Bunny cute? It's a superhero anime with tons of drama.

  5. Hahaha, I would love to see the reaction of parents if we showed children things like Blood+(bloody), B Gata H Kei (very sexually themed) and KissXSis (OVA's and anime). That's not even counting things like Queen's Blade, Green Green (OVA), Deadman Wonderland and many others. This isn't counting hentai...or torture scene in Higurashi of cute(annoying) child. School Days's ending anyone?

Mediums are there as a vessel. It is up to the author to make a story and that story may or may not be for a certain audience.
