What was your first horrible experience with dubbing?

As I've mentioned on the site before, dubbed anime gets a very bad wrap. Not only is it known by those that don't watch anime, it's also hated by anime fans. It is, without a doubt, the anime topic I see most talked about on Twitter. I can honestly count the number of positive comments about dubbing on one hand, but can't keep track of all the bashing.

All this hatred has to come from somewhere. I shudder to think that this is a hive mentality sort of thing. I really don't want to believe that anime fans are just going along with the popular sentiment and saying they hate dubbing for no reason. Having anime fans split like this is bad enough, and to find out that most had no reason for their hatred with be a major issue.

So, for the purposes of this article, let's say that most anime dub haters actually have a good reason or two to dislike the process. It all had to start with a badly dubbed project somewhere down the line. It's fair to say that in the earlier days of anime, there was no shortage of horrendously dubbed anime. Could those features be the ones that set you off?

Leave a comment and let us know of your bad experiences with dubbing. I'd love to hear the reason why you dislike it so much. There have to be a few stand-out experiences that really set the tone of your opinion from there on out. I'm very interested to find out.

  1. I never really understood all the hate for dubbing, until I watched the 4Kids dub of One Piece.

But if you think One Piece is bad, you definitely, DEFINITELY have to check out Going Wild (AKA Patta Potta Monta). Saying that the dubbing is 4Kids quality is a complement. I'm serious. It's like watching a 13 year old's fandub on YouTube. I can't believe it still airs TV.

As for the reasons for disliking it, I could not possibly list all of them. It's got it all. Strange voices, changing voices, random accents, voice cracks, embarrassing line delivery, terrible voice acting in general, bad microphone quality, audio glitches, etc. But not only is the dub laughable, the animation is as well. Keep in mind that it aired AFTER The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya in Japan.

Sorry about the long post. I just can't get over how hilarious this dub is.

  2. When Pokemon made rice balls = donuts. I was pretty young when I saw it, and back then I thought "What is their problem? Those look NOTHING like donuts!" One other series that I can't stand the dubbing on is Comic Party. I don't know why, but the dub irritates me. Usually the most questionable dubs come from NYAV Post or Ocean.

  3. I've never seen a "horrible" dub. And if I did, I was probably too young to care :P
