Liking the bad guy

When it comes to anime, movies, TV shows, novels, you name it...I almost always root for the good guy.  There's something in me that can't stomach when a bad guy gets the upper hand.  Sure, it makes for an interesting story and I can appreciate that, but something just irks me when the bad guy manages to win out in the end.  I don't dislike stories like that or dismiss them either, but it just makes me sad!

I mentioned anime above, and I also said that I almost always root for the good guy.  That 'almost' part relates to anime, because I find myself siding with the bad guys in anime a little more often.  I guess there's something to be said for cartoonish levels of evil, because there are plenty of anime series' that have absolutely over-the-top villains.  That's not the kind I find myself siding with though.

Anime series' tend to have villains that are pretty damn smart.  They're also torn when it comes to doing the wrong thing, but there's something in them that pushes them towards the evil side of things.  Usually their intentions are good, but they lose their way as the push forward with their plans.  When you're talking about a smart villain with honest and good intentions at the start of his evil turn, then I can at least understand where they come from.

Do you find yourself siding with any evil anime characters?  Perhaps you always end up siding with the bad guy!  There's certainly plenty to choose from.  What anime villain do you really enjoy sticking with to the bitter end?
